Colorist

Denver Riddle

Hi I’m Denver. Yeah I know like the city and no I wasn’t born or conceived there :P In high school I borrowed my grandmother’s digital camcorder (the first "MiniDV" camera to the market which technically belonged to the university where she taught) and made extreme sports videos with my friends… luckily we returned it in one piece… She still doesn’t know what exactly I was using it for, shhh our little secret ;)From that moment forward I knew that I was destined to create things with video to either capture experiences or tell powerful stories. When I discovered color grading I felt like it was a powerful extension of what I was capturing on camera. A way to enhance the story and one of the keys to making it look like a big Hollywood production. And so I decided to pursue a career as a colorist but quickly found there weren’t many resources or many people willing to help. It seemed like it was some sort of elitist club where you had pay your dues as an ‘assistant’ for a decade before you got a crack at the big fancy control surface.Well the good news is that isn’t the only way to do it and I did NOT do it that way. I learned that armed with the right techniques and some practice it can really go a long ways and where it took me years to discover some of the techniques you can start learning them today!I’ve had the pleasure of working with various clients and fortune 500 companies, from national commercial spots to feature films, from the U.S. Ski Team to Facebook and Instagram. I've been able to help thousands enjoy what I love and you can trust my experience and my commitment to hold nothing back.Do something great today and create what you love!

I'll start off by saying that I really like this selection of LUT's. There are plenty of classic cinema grades as well as contemporary looks to chose from. I also really like the idea of them being "extra strong" so they can be used in a more modular fashion, I've taken to using them more as a finishing touch to a base grade I create myself, these LUT's are great for that purpose as well. When I find myself stumped in the creative area, it's very easy to get a simple look started and then have a wide variety of film LUT's from stories that are likely similar in some way to your current project, applying that finishing touch with one of these looks really brings the whole grade together.

First of all, I wanna congratulate Denver for creating these film LUTs. They are truly amazing! However, I purchased MPFT Pro with Courses (they are some of the best) and after and watching his courses, it unified my workflow. If you were like me watching tutorials on YouTube here and there, you will learn color grading but you won't get far. If you are trying to become a professional colorist, then don't Just get the LUTs Pro, Invest in ALL his courses. The knowledge he shares through these courses are very valuable and will help you in your career... If you learn his method of teaching which is incredibly intuitive and apply the looks after your color grade, not only will you get some AMAZING results, it will set you apart from others... All the Best!!! ZIA DaVinci Resolve Colorist/Editor

We've been playing with both the Generic Rec. 709 & camera specific versions of these LUTs. Interestingly, you can apply the camera specific LUTs as Camera LUTs in FCPX, which allows you to preview footage with the LUT before cutting it into the timeline. This is a great set of LUTs! I especially love the Blade Runner, Aviator and Graduate looks. Well worth it.

Often when I do courses there are always a few things missing. This can often be very frustrating and I end up with help like "but that was obvious". Thank you for explaining/showing for both Mac and Windows and for several editing software's. This is much better, rather than saying "its basically the same".

I'm not a big believer in look LUTs (or Instagram filters, etc.) because the results have always seemed to be generic and not reflective of a finish that just feels individually 'right'. These Motion Picture Looks are amazing. They let one 'try-on' some striking looks from visually distinctive films. As pointed out, one likely wants to dial them down a bit if you want to emulate the film precisely but, more importantly, you can quickly get to a starting point that is near to where you want to take your look.

I bought MPFL and LUT gallery the moment they appeared. As the all Denver's products they are very well thought and very high quality. They give me very competitive edge while I'm still mastering the higher grading levels myself. I took Pro version mostly because of the ACES version of the LUTs. But none the less - MPFL are the definite cherry on the top of the cake! :) But combination with a LUT gallery is absolutely another level of the work. I think LUT Gallery is a must for every Resolve user.

I have used LUTS throughout my career, but I have wanted to grow beyond them to build my own as my projects require. So, you'd think a LUT package would be an odd thing to praise, but the beauty of these LUT's combined with Denver's training is they help you understand color theory in a far more practical way. One thing I have been doing is putting on these LUT's and then learning how they were built and trying to replicate them using curves and secondary corrections and masks and just following the Workflow. I guess, I'm not using this product the way it was intended, but I have found it to be a fantastic addition to the Color Grading Academy for Premiere.

We are in the middle of the golden era for filmmakers and with the help of Denver and the Color Grading Central team we get to do something that a few years ago would have been impossible. In my mind, LUTs aren't filters, they're custom film stocks, and in this case high quality film stocks from iconic movies. Mad Max! Mad Max! I now own the same film stock Mad Max was shot on. Shut the front door! And, if that's not enough, with Denver's "Look Hacking System" I now have the ability to emulate any movie or image in history. Consider that for a moment - 10 years ago you would need a team of people and camera gear, along with owning a film stock company and lab to achieve these results. I think impossible just got smashed.
